This week we are crushing on Australian- born singer-songwriter, Katie Thorne, as she’s just released her new single “I Hate Your Girlfriend,” accompanied with a music video for the track which is out today.

The video gives pop-diva realness as we’re exported into the disco-dived party of our dreams. As the video progresses, the party gets rowdier, the saturated colours and emotions get deeper, before we’re faced with the reality that the party is over. We’re left with a scene of Katie at the bottom of a staircase as the night comes to an end, amused and smug as we recall the events of that wild night, left on a cliffhanger as we question Katie’s next move.

The track begins with soft, smooth guitar chords as Katie vulnerably pours her heart out to a crush, detailing the complexities of the relationship between herself and someone she admires.
After an earnest introduction, the mood shifts – saucy, salacious and with all the tact of a 3am 'u up?' message. The tasteful guitar quickly turns slick and sleazy; another character in the song, it winks from the sidelines like a devil on Katie's shoulder.
Meanwhile the rhythm section is a set of hot, shallow-breathing lungs, and the airtight interplay between bass and snappy percussion will raise your heart rate, and flush your chest and cheeks.

As the song delves into the chorus, we can feel the emotional intensity as the protagonist expresses the jealousy-fuelled loathing towards her crush's partner. From start to finish, the song feels like a beautifully honest depiction of things we wish we could say out loud, yet we're able to innocently sing along to instead.

Speaking on the track Katie expressed “IHYG was written as a kind of self-exorcism to placate my very own green-eyed-monster – you know, say the bad thing out loud and then maybe it all won’t feel so big. I’ve always been drawn to music that portrays the flawed woman who feels pain.”

The singer's relatability on the topic of women and the internal battles of morality they face when suppressing their dislike for a love interests’ partner is deeply admirable as we feel like we’re not alone with these similar, burning thoughts. The unapologetic authenticity and savage lyricism throughout the track is enough to hit that repeat button, or moreso scream the words in our bedrooms at night.

Coupled with Katie's powerful, red-wine-stained vocal delivery, I Hate Your Girlfriend is fun and flirty with an infectious groove and a secret sophistication.
